November, 2012

In the business world, some people think that once the holidays are upon us it’s time to step back from business and wait for the new year. My thought is that the Christmas and New Year's holidays present an excellent time to get things accomplished, and quite often the best time to get projects completed and spend quality time with hard-to-reach accounts.

Here are Some Examples:

Many of those hard-to-reach VIPs you hope to communicate with are still hard at work between Christmas and New Year's, and from my experience I find this an excellent time to reach them. Principals and senior management are quite often in their offices during this time, so why not give them a call? Rather than retreating during this time…go aggressively for those accounts that are on your hit list and the hardest to land.
Not only will these folks take your call, in many instances they are answering their phone themselves, and do in fact have time to talk. Time and again I have been able to enhance relationships with people by spending quality time on the phone with them – normally a tough thing to accomplish outside of the holiday season.
On another front, use the holidays as a time to purge and clean out both your office and your computer. Here at Mayflower Tours we spend an entire business day cleaning our physical office space along with computer files. We contract a dumpster, recycle obsolete computer equipment, delegate key areas and order pizzas to share. Together we make it a day to organize ourselves for the next year.
What about New Year's Resolutions? Take this time to write up your business and personal goals and plans for the next year. Really sit and think about everything. This can be both personal and business because I find the two go hand in hand. If your goal is to spend more time with your family, then think about what you can cut out of your schedule to increase your productivity and give you more time to spend with them. For me, I need to allow myself the chance to accept more personal free time. So for now, I am exploring what I could be doing with my free time - things like working out, helping family and friends, participating with worthwhile organizations or expanding my hobbies. Remember, I am a very high type A personality.

The holidays are a wonderful time to connect with family and friends. It’s also a very good time to select key objectives and focus on them. Be creative and let your mind reset itself. For me, the holidays are a very productive and rewarding time period in so many ways.

Christmas and New Year's may be a few weeks away, but this is the time to begin your game plan. So get going, you will be thrilled you did.

Happy Holidays,
