What is your management style?

Is it "when in danger or in doubt, run in circles scream and shout?" Those of us who have people that report to them know that this is management technique at its worst.

Recently I read an excellent article about a cutting-edge program called "agile development" that has been rapidly spreading from manufacturers to startup companies. It's a system of group dynamics in which workers are organized into small teams, hold daily progress sessions and weekly reviews. The central core is accountability.

It hit me that this is the management style that I endorse. Meetings increase communication, improve productivity, lower stress, and generally, everyone knows what to expect. I am a communicator and an organizer - and how I do love my checklists.

Here are some of my management guidelines:

Picture it done and move towards it. "Keep your eye on the prize"
What gets measured, gets done
Set a goal and break it down to bite-sized-pieces
Plan your work and work your plan
If you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there
Teach your group to fish and they will be fishermen all their lives
If someone is doing well, leave them alone
If it ain't broke, don't fix it
Set dates for tasks to be completed, then sit back and watch it unfold

My management style comes from the school of hard knocks along with a tremendous desire and tenacity to achieve. Failure is never an option. If "agile development" is good for companies, makes us more successful and creates a better work place, then bring it on.
