One of the most remarkable sights in Japan is the Fushimi Inari shrine. Nestled in the forested mountains of Kyoto, this Shinto shrine is famous for its thousands of vermillion torii gates that line the path towards the top of Mount Inari. The seemingly endless path of torii gates makes for an impressive setting, considered to be one of the most famous images of Japan, and has been featured in popular films like Memoirs of a Geisha.

With a history tracing back to the 8th century, the bright Fushimi Inari complex is comprised of multiple shrines and torii gate paths, speckled with dozens of Kitsune fox statues. The vibrant red color seen comes from the Shinto belief that red is the color of the gods and is said to ward of disease and malevolent energy. Kitsune imagery can also be found all over the complex, as foxes are the chosen messengers for the rice god Inari. A visit to Fushimi Inari is a must for any world traveler!
