"You are the sum total of everything you've ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot - it's all there. Everything influences each of us, and because of that I try to make sure that my experiences are positive." – Maya Angelou
Destination Spotlight – Boston Harbor

Imagine yourself standing on a pier with a cool breeze running through your hair, the warm sun kissing your skin, lighthouses in the distance and the smell of freshly cooked catch of the day attracting visitors into quaint seafood restaurants. Boating, kayaking, fishing, picnicking and an array of activities set amongst the awe-inspiring backdrop of Boston’s skyline. The very lively Boston Harbor of today is much different from what it was in the past.

Boston is a city rich in American history. A stroll along the 2.5 mile Freedom Trail will provide a glimpse into the events surrounding our independence from Great Britain, including 16 historical sights. The Boston Tea Party naturally comes to mind as the most well-known event in which patriots dressed as Mohawk Indians, protested unfair taxation by sneaking onto vessels filled with tea imported from London, breaking the cartons and tossing chests of tea into the Harbor. Throughout the years, an increase in trade and imports made Boston Harbor an incredibly busy port which brought with it a significant growth in Boston’s population and transformed Boston into the booming city that it is. One can only imagine the hustle and bustle of the Boston Harbor filled with imported goods, hundreds of workers unloading the vessels and preparing the ships while immigrants gaze at the impressive skyline as they make their way to their final destination.

Travel Topic – Seasonal Travel Tips

It’s no surprise that each season offers unique activities and sight-seeing opportunities. While many of us favor a particular season, we should also recognize the beauty in the changes of each season. Here are some exciting activities and tips for each season of travel…

Spring – The increasing temperatures and budding flowers welcome people to the outdoors from their winter hibernation. Visit Washington, DC for the Cherry Blossom Festival or consider the Holland Tulip Festival in Michigan to experience the awakening of spring. Don’t forget an umbrella and light jacket in case it rains or the temperature fluctuates.

Summer – School is out and the kids are restless. Consider a family vacation to an outstanding National Park to see pinnacles, canyons, buttes and much more! With soaring temperatures and sunny skies be certain to remain hydrated and carry a water bottle and protect your skin with sunscreen, sunglasses or a hat.

Autumn – The vibrant hues of autumn color spread their way across the nation as leaf-peepers seek the best locations for Autumn Foliage. New England is an incredibly popular destination to see the best of autumn color! The crisp, cool days may require a scarf or some layered clothing.

Winter – The beauty of a winter wonderland and snow-draped evergreen trees is a treasure to the eyes. If you’re not one for winter, enjoy a warm getaway to the south while taking in the excitement of the holiday season. Visit San Antonio’s Riverwalk in all its decadent holiday décor. The beautiful cascading snow may seem less inviting if you’re not prepared, so if venturing into the snow, be sure to have all the winter necessities to keep warm: coat, gloves, scarf, hat and boots.

Mayflower Tours' Sustainable Journeys

How can you help reduce your environmental impact? Each edition, we offer tips on helping to keep your travels green!

Visit the Library
A library is abound with knowledge – wall to wall of novels, stories of distant lands, historical happenings, biographies, classic reads and so much more. Rather than buying a travel book for every vacation you embark on, head to your local library. Not only can you rent a guide book for an upcoming trip but also pick up a leisurely read for the time spent on an airplane, motorcoach or car. Visit the travel section and read about other destinations you have always wanted to visit – National Parks, exclusive beaches or resorts, African safaris, a holiday throughout Europe, etc. You may even stumble upon a destination you had never considered. Renting books from the library not only saves you money but also helps the environment by reducing waste and utilizing the resources available to you. Check out your local library – you never know what you might find!
